Bernhard Luginbühl was one of the leading Swiss artists in the second half of the 20th century. He produced huge sculptures in metal and wood, along with numerous engravings and drawings, including the poster for the 24th Festival. Three years earlier the Swiss supermarket chain Migros had commissioned him to produce a paper bag as part of its series of artist’s bags, and the two designs are similar. Resembling asymmetrical lace, his white on black engraving consists of multiple overlapping abstract details. The gaze and mind are lost in the maze of this composition, its paper cutting-style decoration teeming with a frenzy that the frame can barely contain.
