Next stop the United States, for the 1980 joint Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival. Young student Karen Ringler Whittey won the poster competition held by the Detroit College for Creative Studies with her design showing a young woman plucking the strings of a rainbow double bass: a modern jazz muse who conveys the magic and beauty of a music that transcends difference. Ringer was also the first woman to design a poster for the Festival.
