2018

Christian Marclay, a Swiss artist who has spent most of his career in the United States, explores the visual dimension of sound and music in works that deal with onomatopoeia or use, for example, vinyl records as a sculptural material. For the 2018 poster, the artist used the old cyanotype technique with which he is familiar. The solarisation of objects is used to obtain a negative photographic print on a blue background. The objects revealed here are cassette tapes, an outmoded audio medium that is experiencing a return to grace via musicians’ mixtapes. The unwound magnetic tapes form party streamers reminiscent of Jean Tinguely‘s poster, one of Marclay’s artistic references.
